Why do so many people say that…?

Why do so many people say that Nikon has been making cameras longer than Canon? Though the company that would become Nikon (Japan Optical Industries Corporation) was founded 20 years earlier than the company that would become Canon (Precision Optical Instruments Laboratory), for quite a long time they only made optics such as lenses, binoculars, and bomb sights. The first Canon camera was introduced immediately after the company was started in the mid 30s (using a Nikon lens), while Nikon didn’t release a camera until 1948.

They have been making “professional” SLR cameras longer than Canon.

The first “professional” Canon SLR I owned was the Canon F1 first made in 1971 ( and I bought it at JC Penney’s … USA Canon had yet to be formed) … a full 12 years after Nikon introduced their Nikon F. During those years from 1959 to 71, Nikon and Pentax were the cameras used by photojournalists for the most part. Rarely did Canon show up to a press conference even after the introduction of the F-1 .. I know I was the only one with an F-1 for a long time.

Then Canon dumped those fine cameras and lenses for the EOS system in 1988. The “bloodline” of the Nikon’s go back 49 years, the Canon only 20 with a break in it from another run of 11 years.

I can still use the lenses from the early 1960’s on my D300 and D3.

My old Canon FD lenses can only gather dust in this digital world
