Bird watching takes the right equipment to make the difference between a fun, relaxing hobby and an exercise in
frustration. Birding binoculars make all the difference and allow you to not only get out in nature but to
birdwatch up close and personal.
The usual choice for most birdwatchers is 7, 8 or 10x magnification in overall use. You don’t want to have too much
power because it will give you a smaller field of view, as well as less light entry and poor image quality. The
binoculars will also be heavier and harder to manage and thwarting shaking will be more of a challenge.
Lens coatings let more light through which results in a high quality image with the best coating being a fully
multicoated lens. A water repellent coating will also enhance your birding binoculars, which will help with light
rain and fog conditions.
Birding binoculars is one of the essential pieces of equipment for successful bird watching because they will not
only bring your images to life, but allow you to catch a load of sightings that would otherwise be restricted with
the naked eye.
It can be a good idea to go for the more expensive binoculars, which will give you a higher quality image. You
don’t have to go for the most expensive, however, as the best birding binoculars are usually in the mid-price
range.
Basically, binoculars are made from two telescopes connected together. The lens closest to the object is called the
objective lens, and the lens closest to your eye is the eyepiece. The object becomes bigger, but upside down and
backwards. In order to straighten out the object, a prism is needed. A prism is like a mirror but it doesn’t have a
reflective back, it is just a piece of glass that acts like a mirror when light hits it at a certain angle.
Porro Prism binoculars were very popular until the 1950-1960’s when roof prism binoculars were made available. Roof
prism binoculars automatically shorten the distance between the lenses making roof prism binoculars lighter and
smaller. Roof prism binoculars require precise handling of equipment because they require a more complex light path
to work. The Porro prism binoculars are a lot cheaper and easier to use, but roof prism binoculars are considered
the industry standard.
A wide range of binoculars can be used for nature study and bird watching. However an 8x 21 maybe all right for
watching a blackbird in your garden on a bright, sunny day, but they would not be the best binoculars for birding,
if you were in a shaded woodland area. Here you would need birding binoculars with a bigger objective lens, to
allow in more light, and therefore enhance your view.
Eyecups are an important consideration for the bird watching enthusiast. Often cheaper binoculars have folding
eyecups. These can be difficult to move, leading to the bird flying away, before you get them in place. Look for
birding binoculars with eyecup that twist up, or slide in and out.

Watching things up close can be very entertaining, and seeing clear details is a feeling that cannot be described.
When buying binoculars, it is important that you find one that is effective, durable, light, and powerful. Before
you buy Binoculars, it is important to figure what kind of prism and lens each binocular has. Plastic lenses are
more expensive than glass lenses because plastic lenses often have a coat that will reduce glare, increase
brightness despite low-light conditions, and protect your eyes from UV radiation. Different binoculars have
different settings, lens coatings, and knobs.
Before you go buy a binocular, do some research on how they’re used and how powerful they are. Figure out how often
you will need them and how much you are willing to pay. Look online and read reviews on the different brands, the
most famous of which include Nikon, Canon, Olympus, and many more. Learn about the pros and cons about each brand,
and decide for yourself which is most compatible with your needs.
Close focus is simply how close you can get to the object you’re viewing before it goes out-of-focus. Larger
binoculars have close focus on the order of 15-20 feet or more. This means that any object viewed with these
binoculars must be 20 feet or so away in order to view it with the binoculars. Any object closer than the close
focus distance will be seen out-of-focus and quite blurry. Smaller binoculars will have smaller close focus
distances, on the order of 15 feet or less.
If you’ll often find yourself viewing such small objects up close, then the close focus is a feature that you
should consider when selecting your binoculars. Be aware that the close focus of compact binoculars ranges from 6
feet to 28 feet.
Eye relief of the right distance helps glass-wearers use binoculars successfully. Eye relief is a term that is used
when describing binoculars. Eye relief is the maximum distance in millimeters (mm) that you can hold the binoculars
away from your eyes and still see the whole view.
If you want to be able to use your binoculars for viewing butterflies or other cool insects, you’ll want a pair of
binoculars that have a small close focus. For example, if you see a butterfly that is 8 feet away, a pair of 10×25
binoculars, with a close focus of 9.8 feet, will make you take a step back to view the butterfly in focus and risk
startling your subject. A better choice, although not as powerful for distant objects, might be a pair of 8×22
binoculars.
A rule of thumb is that a pair of compact binoculars should have a minimum eye relief of 13 mm for eyeglass wearers
to use comfortably. Even if you don’t wear corrective lenses, you might want to consider the eye relief of
binoculars if you regularly wear sunglasses in the field. An eye relief of 16 to 18 mm is even better for those
wearing glasses.
The more you explore the features of binoculars, you will find out that there are trade-offs to be made. For
example, a roof prism 8×22 binoculars might have a close focus of 6.6 feet, which is really great for viewing
butterflies, bugs and other objects up close. Inexpensive models often have smaller eye relief distances, like 10
mm. Not good enough for eyeglass-wearers. Contrast that with more expensive models that can have eye relief of 20
to 28 mm. The extra cost is probably worth it for the eyeglass wearer.

You will discover three errors generally made by novice birders when selecting the best binoculars for bird watching. You possibly can learn from the mistakes of others and opt for the most beneficial binoculars for birdwatching the very first time. You are going to have more fun with your newest hobby and get a better price too.

Mistake Number One – obtaining the strongest binoculars you are able to afford. You will find two problems with extremely strong binoculars. First, they are usually very large. Remember those old “Victory at Sea” films with the giant binoculars attached to the railings of ships? Do not forget, you are going to carry these around with you for hours on end. More importantly, extremely strong binoculars are tricky to use. It’s difficult to hold them motionless with no jiggling and also the field of view is very narrow. That makes it tough to find the bird you’re observing, in particular if it’s flying or even hopping around on a lawn. The best binoculars for bird watching will be close to 8 to 10 power.

Mistake Number Two – obtaining binoculars that are not waterproof. You say you may never go birding while it is raining? That may be true, but even water vapor from humidity in the air can cause you headaches. If your binoculars get any amount of moisture inside them they can fog up inside when that moisture condenses as a result of a change in temperatures just like your mirror gets fogged up when you take a hot shower. Even if they dry out afterward, that day of bird watching was ruined. Good, waterproof binoculars are filled with nitrogen to keep out moisture and even this may be found inside a somewhat inexpensive pair.

Mistake Number Three – believing the most expensive binoculars are the most effective. Although there is a relationship between price and quality, the average birder doesn’t need to invest a massive amount of money on binoculars. A fifteen dollar pair will not have anywhere near the optical quality of the $100 pair and it’ll show in the sharpness of the image, in particular all around the edges. But the difference in between a $250 pair and a $500 pair is going to be much less noticeable. As binoculars get into the upper price ranges, the general quality still may get better, but in a lot smaller, even imperceptible increments. It’s the old notion of diminishing returns. The good news is you don’t have to spend several hundred dollars for good birding binoculars.

Stay clear of these three mistakes when choosing your birding binoculars and you are going to do just fine. Locate a pair that is waterproof and around 8 to 10 power. You’ll be able to locate a great pair of birding binoculars in the one to three hundred dollar range. In case your budget won’t let you go over fifty dollars or so, don’t worry. You are able to still have a great deal of enjoyment now and maybe up grade when you need it.

As spring is upon us, golfers and golf aficionados are geared for summer full of Sun, Golf and Fun. Ubiquitous on the golf course is the huge Golf Umbrella with bright colors and promotions.
Golf is not a summer activity alone. You can find golf being played almost year around. It is not always under the bright Sun either. More often than not you will see golfers putting away in drizzle and rain.
In the Sun or in rain you see golfers and golf enthusiasts using a variety of umbrellas to protect them from Sun or the rain. You see the golf fans struggling and juggling with other bags, cameras, binoculars and the other items they carry. Golfers might use Caddies to protect them with umbrellas while carrying and jostling with other gear. If a golfer has to carry an umbrella he/she is restrained from concentrating on his/her game and practicing with his/her iron. The spectators really miss on a lot of thrill when their hands are not free to clap and cheer.
How would it be if the golfer, the caddy and the spectators wouldn’t have to worry about this anymore? What if they were protected intimately by their favorite bright and shining umbrellas while being hands free? It is now with the invention of Brella Bag, which is a bag that is an umbrella holder and more. It is a patented bag designed to hold an umbrella leaving the user’s hands free to carry other items or just relax them.

Mount Everest, the Grand Canyon, and Niagara Falls are all marvels of the natural world. But one of nature’s greatest spectacles lies in one of the planet’s most remote areas.

The majestic Na Pali Coast of Kauai is a spectacular wilderness area that the typical tourist will never see. Located along Kauai’s remote North Shore, the Na Pali Coast is an awe-inspiring 6,175 acres; and although it has been converted into a state park, and remains as isolated from civilization as it was many centuries ago. Practically inaccessible to vehicular traffic, the Na Pali Coast is ideal for adventurous hikers and campers. However, to truly appreciate the unmitigated view of the famous and breathtaking cliffs, your best bet is to travel by helicopter or boat.

If fate allows you to cruise the 15-mile stretch of Na Pali Coastline, you will witness an awesome view of the stunning 4,000-foot cliffs. The area was named for these rugged cliffs, as “pali” is the Hawaiian word for “cliffs”. As you near the coastline, you will see these cliffs rising abruptly from the Pacific Ocean, occasionally giving way to gaps and revealing wide stretches of golden sand, deep jungle valleys and the mysterious sea caves between.

Winter is the best time to go on a cruise up and down the Na Pali Coast, as that is when the humpback whales frequent the Kauai waters. If you take a chartered ship, your captain will likely know exactly where these wonderful sea creatures can be seen. Truly fortunate sight-seekers will have the opportunity to take pictures and enjoy a spectacular show by these playful dirigibles of the deep as they perform with sea turtles, dolphins and other oceanic creatures.

Humpback whales can be measure 40 feet in length and can weigh up to 85,000 pounds. The fifth largest of the world’s greatest whales, humpbacks are seen only in Hawaii over the winter months. Federal law protects these breathtaking creatures, so their population is rising. Plan a tour of the Na Pali Coast during humpback season, and you’re sure to witness a fantastic spectacle of nature.

Na Pali boat tours are not necessarily restricted to the coastline. Both Hanakapiai and Kalalau Beach (named one of America’s Top 40 Beaches by the National Geographic Traveler) are well-known Na Pali Coast State Park destinations. You can also visit the famous arch of Honopu, or the stunning fringing reefs of Nualolo and Milolii.

Depending on your itinerary and how adventurous you feel, the tour options you choose can be as wildly exciting as the Na Pali coastline itself. Most boat companies launch their charter tours from west side harbours. However, you can choose to sail from the quaint town of Hanalei if you choose to charter one of the smaller companies. Cruises to Ni’ihau are also available, providing you the opportunity to stop for a bit of snorkeling and scuba diving.

Tips to Successful Kauai Whale Watching:

* Choose a professional boat company, with a captain who knows where to find the whales and more importantly, respects the safety and environment of the whales

* Catamarans, cruise vessels, sailboats and rubber zodiac rafts are all good choices for whale watching

* Bring your camera so that you can preserve this incredible sight forever. You could be in for a wet ride, especially if you’ll be riding in the bow area of the boat. Consider bringing waterproof, disposable cameras.

* Binoculars give you a closer observation of whale behavior, but they can be tricky to use if the water is rough. Your best bet for binoculars is to choose a pair with 8 x 40, or 7 x 50 dimensions.

* Keep a keen eye. You could see spinner dolphins, sea turtles, albatross and other sea birds and animals, in addition to humpback whales. Pay attention and see what you can spot in the air and in the water.

* Dress accordingly. Wear a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. Remember, you’ll be in a boat, so be prepared to get wet. Wear your beach clothes, and bring a towel. If you decide to bring extra clothes to change into, make sure you keep them in a waterproof bag.

* If you are prone to motion sickness, be sure to take homeopathic or non-prescription motion sickness prevention medication at least one hour before getting on a boat. Your trip will likely include the North Shore, where winter waves can swell to 10-30 feet, so the ride can get very bumpy at higher speeds. Medicated motion sickness treatments can make you drowsy and you don’t want to miss a thing, so consider a non-medicinal alternative. Dry bread, crackers, ginger, papaya and avoiding alcohol can help reduce nausea.

Traveling is a great way to witness nature’s most impressive sites firsthand, but the truly adventurous travelers go to where others only dream of. When planning your next journey, plan on cruising the Na Pali coastline with humpback whales. It will be an experience you’ll never forget.

For a truly thrilling and once in a lifetime experience the island of Maui is the place to head to view the great humpback whales, around 1,000 of which travel 4,000 miles from Alaska to the archipelago to breed and give birth between the months of November and March. For whale watching, Hawaii is the place to travel to, if you want to see the Hawaiian humpback whale in its winter home to which it returns to give birth. The months between December and April are all good months to see this magnificent beast so there are plenty of whale watching Hawaii opportunities.

These fabulous beasts can be seen off the shore of Maui and there are several good vantage points such as McGregor Point, which overlooks Maalaea Bay on the west coast of Maui or the Outrigger Wailea Resort where you can stop and view the whales and can sometimes also spot spinner dolphins. The important factor is you need a wide ocean view, to increase your chances of spotting whales, and if you visit from around January, you might see their calves. For a closer view of whale watching Hawaii visitors should head out on a whale-watching cruise from Lahaina and Ma’alaea, which virtually guarantee sightings in January and February.

As it takes patience for whale-watching Hawaii thankfully has plenty of beautiful ocean views to keep you interested. Lahaina is itself worth exploring for its historic past as the center for the Pacific whaling industry with many significant buildings to visit including the Old Prison, the Seaman’s Hospital and the Pioneer Inn.

Maui is a beautiful island to visit with stunning scenery, beautiful beaches, great restaurants and a vast range of activities including some of the best whale watching Hawaii has to offer. Beach lovers will be stunned by the wonderful beaches at Wailea and Makena whilst Ka’anapali is the largest resort area on Maui and has large sweeping beaches. The scenery on the long drive along the Hana Coast is fabulous and is hailed one of the world’s most spectacular drives. For fantastic food Maui’s award-winning establishments offer a winning meal or for a more relaxed atmosphere there are casual seaside fish houses to visit.

Haleakala National Park on Maui offers an awesome view from the summit of Mount Haleakala to the look out point at the Haleakala crater to look down at the vast 25-square-mile crater floor and it is well worth taking a break from all the opportunities for whale watching Hawaii offers, to add another once in a lifetime experience to your trip. There are some wonderful snorkelling spots to be discovered including Molokini, a sunken volcanic crater rim and marine reserve off Maui. Another great spot is Turtle Town just off Wailea where there are green turtles to swim amongst.

To spot a whale, look out for water spray that rises 10-20 feet into the air. The creature only needs to breathe every 7-20 minutes so you may have to watch for a while. Once you have spotted the water spray being exhaled from the whale’s blowhole, zoom your binoculars on the area and wait. Soon, the whale will surface to breathe.

The thrill of seeing whales in abundance makes a visit to Maui well worthwhile.? Thomas Cook offers a 14 night stay with flights staying at the Sheraton Maui from ?2,499 per person, from 1st? 30th June 2010.
