Nikon wasn’t the company’s name until 1988.

Prior to this, the company was officially called Nippon Kogaku K.K. – many people believe the name changed earlier, but it wasn’t until the late 80’s. 1st April 1988, to be precise, Nikon Corporation was officially (re)born.

Of course, they had been using Nikon as a trademarked brand for many years (history suggests the name Nikon was first invented in the mid 1940’s), so why did they eventually decide to switch? Well, this little story direct from Nikon’s website may shed some light.
Then-president Shigetada Fukuoka met with former French President Jacques Chirac. On hearing the name Nippon Kogaku Kogyo, Mr Chirac simply tilted his head in bewilderment. When Mr. Fukuoka said the word “Nikon,” however, the Parisian mayor understood immediately.
President Fukuoka said “From hereon, I don’t want us to be limited by the name Kogaku (“optics”). Let us work toward even greater advancements.”

Nikon didn’t manufacture their first camera until 1948.

Thirty-one years after the company was founded by the merging of three separate optical manufacturers in 1917, Nikon launched their first camera, the Nikon I. Prior to this, Nikon made lenses under the Nikkor brand, along with binoculars and microscopes.

Demand for the camera in Japan was huge, but it wasn’t without it’s problems. A rush to manufacture left the camera somewhat unreliable, with the film advance often failing to work, which led to many customer complaints and forced Nikon into financial difficulties. However, they rebounded with 1949’s Nikon M and 1950’s Nikon S, then the S2, SP and finally the classic Nikon F SLR, quality and reliability improving with each model.

Nikon originally made all of their now arch-rival Canon’s lenses.

Canon’s first cameras were inexpensive Japanese Leica clones, and in 1934 it announced a 35mm rangefinder called the Kwanon. The Kwanon was just a prototype never put into production – it was followed by their first commercial camera, the Hansa Canon, in 1936. Canon had one problem, however – they didn’t have any experience of making lenses, so they contracted Nippon Kogaku Kogyo, already a proven optical designer and manfufacturer, and used Nikkor lenses. The Hansa Canon actually shipped as standard with a Nikkor 50mm f/3.5 lens.

In fact, a large part of the first Canon camera was made by Nikon – Nippon Kogaku was responsible for the lens, the lens mount, the viewfinder, and the complete rangefinder mechanism. Canon did start developing lenses in 1937, but they weren’t available until after WWII, and they didn’t launch their fast 50mm Serenar f/2 until 1947.

When launched in 1959, the Nikon F cost an average of three months salary.

We may think that we have it bad with the price of today’s digital SLRs, but the first Nikon SLR cost 67,000 Yen – three times the salary of a Japanese government employee at the time. They still managed to sell a million of them over the next 15 years!

This was the camera that introduced us to the F mount – the very same mount (albeit with added features, especially in the electronic age) that is still in use today. This mount was revolutionary at the time, having a huge diameter in comparison to it’s rangefinder peers, which allowed Nikkor F lenses to be far more resistant to mechanical vignetting.

Nikon’s first Digital SLR, the D1, was developed from scratch in just two years.

We may take for granted now that a new camera will be digital, but just over 10 years ago this was certainly not the case. Although the first Coolpix (the Coolpix 100) was produced in 1997, Nikon’s classic D1 wasn’t introduced until 1999.

The order to produce a DSLR came from Nikon’s president in 1997, and engineers responded by saying it would take four years, three at a minimum. They were given two.

The result was a 2.7mp DSLR with many features bettered by even today’s entry-level cameras (and also by it’s contemporary digicams; the Coolpix 100 was 3mp), but at the time it was revolutionary. The D1 quickly displaced Kodak from dominance of the DSLR market, and sales exceeded the target of 100,000 bodies per year even at it’s US$5500 asking price. With the D1, Nikon’s market share eclipsed that of Canon. Strangely, the camera used the NTSC colorspace, not the SRGB or AdobeRGB we use today.

Today there is a cut throat competition in the market. Almost every second company wants to keep an upper hand on its competitors and in order to do that they are ready to go any extent. Though the list of such companies is quite a big one but that doesn’t mean that all the companies do the same. There still are companies which have managed to keep themselves out of this blind race and their main objective is to concentrate on their own work rather than pulling other’s leg to move ahead of it. Customers satisfaction tops the priority list of such companies and probably that is why people give weightage to these brands when they go out in the market to get something new for them or for others. When a list of such companies would be prepared, Nikon India would surely get a very respectable place.

The past of the company is not less interesting than its present. Nikon is a Japanese company which came into picture in the year 1917 however at that time it was not known by the same name. People knew it as Nippon Kogaku Tokyo K.K. but later on, in 1988 the company was renamed to its present name and since then it worked really hard to make a special place for itself in the hearts of the people. There are many products such as cameras, microscopes, spectacle lenses, binoculars and many more which are sold under the same brand name.

Not many people know that the company helped the Japanese military a lot by providing them products such as binoculars, bomb sights, lenses, periscopes etc and in order to meet the needs of its army, the company grew in size to nineteen factories with 23,000 employees. Once the war was over, Nikon returned back to its original business of serving the people.

Nikon is not a well known brand of Japan only but actually the whole world has accepted it whole heartedly. Indians are very particular when its a question of investing their hard earned money and they too hardly think twice before going ahead with the idea of buying anything rolled out of the company. This is the kind of reputation enjoyed by Nikon in India.

A good quality pair of hunting binoculars will help you to enjoy the outdoor experience and will assist you in locating your game and completing a successful hunt. Make sure that you buy the best hunting binoculars and also read all the specifications before buying.

You will next want to look for quality binoculars that have a larger objective lens diameter. The lens at the front of the binoculars is the objective lens and the larger size of the objective lens then the more light will be let into the binoculars resulting in a brighter image. In dim light situations such as an overcast sky, bad weather, or in the dark woods where the trees shade the light, then quality binoculars with larger objective lenses are a big advantage. The second number behind the x associated with a binoculars’ description, such as 6×30 or 7×35, refers to the size of the objective lens in millimeters.

Before you go looking for a pair of binoculars you need to sit down and decide what you will be using your new binoculars for. Will you be hunting, whale watching, or watching birds, or looking for a pair of military binoculars. Perhaps you are planning a sight-seeing trip to some exotic location.
Knowing what you will be using the binoculars for will give you a specific type of binoculars to look for. For example, if you are planning on using your binoculars for birdwatching you want to look for a pair that is designed with good image quality. If you are planning on taking your binoculars on the family boat you will want a pair that is completely waterproof.

A good rule of thumb is, unless you are a private investigator or international spy, avoid buying a pair of binoculars with a magnification/zoom greater then 10x’s. Magnification over ten generally causes the binoculars to lose some image crispness. The image is also duller when the magnification is greater then ten. Some binoculars are designed with a roof prism to make the best use of natural lighting.

Bird watching takes the right equipment to make the difference between a fun, relaxing hobby and an exercise in
frustration. Birding binoculars make all the difference and allow you to not only get out in nature but to
birdwatch up close and personal.
The usual choice for most birdwatchers is 7, 8 or 10x magnification in overall use. You don’t want to have too much
power because it will give you a smaller field of view, as well as less light entry and poor image quality. The
binoculars will also be heavier and harder to manage and thwarting shaking will be more of a challenge.
Lens coatings let more light through which results in a high quality image with the best coating being a fully
multicoated lens. A water repellent coating will also enhance your birding binoculars, which will help with light
rain and fog conditions.
Birding binoculars is one of the essential pieces of equipment for successful bird watching because they will not
only bring your images to life, but allow you to catch a load of sightings that would otherwise be restricted with
the naked eye.
It can be a good idea to go for the more expensive binoculars, which will give you a higher quality image. You
don’t have to go for the most expensive, however, as the best birding binoculars are usually in the mid-price
range.
Basically, binoculars are made from two telescopes connected together. The lens closest to the object is called the
objective lens, and the lens closest to your eye is the eyepiece. The object becomes bigger, but upside down and
backwards. In order to straighten out the object, a prism is needed. A prism is like a mirror but it doesn’t have a
reflective back, it is just a piece of glass that acts like a mirror when light hits it at a certain angle.
Porro Prism binoculars were very popular until the 1950-1960’s when roof prism binoculars were made available. Roof
prism binoculars automatically shorten the distance between the lenses making roof prism binoculars lighter and
smaller. Roof prism binoculars require precise handling of equipment because they require a more complex light path
to work. The Porro prism binoculars are a lot cheaper and easier to use, but roof prism binoculars are considered
the industry standard.
A wide range of binoculars can be used for nature study and bird watching. However an 8x 21 maybe all right for
watching a blackbird in your garden on a bright, sunny day, but they would not be the best binoculars for birding,
if you were in a shaded woodland area. Here you would need birding binoculars with a bigger objective lens, to
allow in more light, and therefore enhance your view.
Eyecups are an important consideration for the bird watching enthusiast. Often cheaper binoculars have folding
eyecups. These can be difficult to move, leading to the bird flying away, before you get them in place. Look for
birding binoculars with eyecup that twist up, or slide in and out.

The price range of $200 to $500 seems to be the best for the majority of hunting enthusiasts. Binoculars costing
less than $200 often are found to be lacking in at least one desired feature, while those with prices above $500
may not offer substantial additional features to justify the price increase.
Waterproofing and fog proofing are important binocular features because hunters often encounter changes in weather
conditions during the hunting day. This can be changes from sun to rain, from warm to cold, or include sleet and
snow. The moisture condensation associated with these weather changes are prevented with a solidly constructed
waterproof/fog proof binocular.
Waterproof binoculars are purged of their interior oxygen, and this purged space is replaced with nitrogen, and are
O-ring sealed to create a waterproof/fog proof construction. Fog proofing normally is a by-product of this
waterproofing construction. Insist on hunting binoculars that are specifically listed as both waterproof and fog
proof.
Hunting is a demanding sport and your hunting binoculars will need to stand up to the various elements they will be
exposed to. Most hunting conditions will require rugged, waterproof, and fog proof pair of quality binoculars.
Rugged due to the extreme conditions where the hunter will use his binoculars. Waterproof because of the moisture
and possibility of rain that the hunter encounters.
The exit pupil diameter, refers to the size of the opening next to the eye. The ocular lens is opposite from the
objective lens, which allows the light and the image to enter the eye. Generally, a bigger ocular lens means more
light reaches your eyes, producing a brighter image. A large ocular lens also makes it easier to maintain a full
image if your hands move or shake.
The ocular lens diameter is calculated as the ratio between the objective lens and the magnification. For example,
in a 7×35 pair of binoculars the ocular lens is 35 divided by 7 which equals 5mm. For most hunting applications an
ocular lens of 4mm or 5mm works great. Keep in mind that your eyes’ pupil size varies from approximately 2.5mm in
bright light to 7mm in low light and these sizes decrease as you get older.
There are various designs of binoculars which are Galilean binoculars, Prism binoculars and Roof Prism binoculars.
Binoculars are the worlds most used optical instrument and have many uses. Finding the right binoculars for you can
be confusing, however don’t be confused. Binoculars are usually labeled by two numbers and seldom if ever are they
labeled with three. The first number is the magnification, while the second number represents the diameter. Once
you have the correct magnification and diameter, make sure you have the field of view that you desire.
You will most likely be taking your binoculars with you to all different terrains, so make sure you get a pair that
will last through the hobbies you put yourself through.

Watching things up close can be very entertaining, and seeing clear details is a feeling that cannot be described.
When buying binoculars, it is important that you find one that is effective, durable, light, and powerful. Before
you buy Binoculars, it is important to figure what kind of prism and lens each binocular has. Plastic lenses are
more expensive than glass lenses because plastic lenses often have a coat that will reduce glare, increase
brightness despite low-light conditions, and protect your eyes from UV radiation. Different binoculars have
different settings, lens coatings, and knobs.
Before you go buy a binocular, do some research on how they’re used and how powerful they are. Figure out how often
you will need them and how much you are willing to pay. Look online and read reviews on the different brands, the
most famous of which include Nikon, Canon, Olympus, and many more. Learn about the pros and cons about each brand,
and decide for yourself which is most compatible with your needs.
Close focus is simply how close you can get to the object you’re viewing before it goes out-of-focus. Larger
binoculars have close focus on the order of 15-20 feet or more. This means that any object viewed with these
binoculars must be 20 feet or so away in order to view it with the binoculars. Any object closer than the close
focus distance will be seen out-of-focus and quite blurry. Smaller binoculars will have smaller close focus
distances, on the order of 15 feet or less.
If you’ll often find yourself viewing such small objects up close, then the close focus is a feature that you
should consider when selecting your binoculars. Be aware that the close focus of compact binoculars ranges from 6
feet to 28 feet.
Eye relief of the right distance helps glass-wearers use binoculars successfully. Eye relief is a term that is used
when describing binoculars. Eye relief is the maximum distance in millimeters (mm) that you can hold the binoculars
away from your eyes and still see the whole view.
If you want to be able to use your binoculars for viewing butterflies or other cool insects, you’ll want a pair of
binoculars that have a small close focus. For example, if you see a butterfly that is 8 feet away, a pair of 10×25
binoculars, with a close focus of 9.8 feet, will make you take a step back to view the butterfly in focus and risk
startling your subject. A better choice, although not as powerful for distant objects, might be a pair of 8×22
binoculars.
A rule of thumb is that a pair of compact binoculars should have a minimum eye relief of 13 mm for eyeglass wearers
to use comfortably. Even if you don’t wear corrective lenses, you might want to consider the eye relief of
binoculars if you regularly wear sunglasses in the field. An eye relief of 16 to 18 mm is even better for those
wearing glasses.
The more you explore the features of binoculars, you will find out that there are trade-offs to be made. For
example, a roof prism 8×22 binoculars might have a close focus of 6.6 feet, which is really great for viewing
butterflies, bugs and other objects up close. Inexpensive models often have smaller eye relief distances, like 10
mm. Not good enough for eyeglass-wearers. Contrast that with more expensive models that can have eye relief of 20
to 28 mm. The extra cost is probably worth it for the eyeglass wearer.

Everyone knows that binoculars will help you see things that are far away. The varieties available are waterproof
binoculars, image stabilized binoculars, zoom binoculars, and astronomy binoculars. Before you buy any pair of
binoculars, there are some basic things to know so you choose the right ones for your needs.
Image stabilized binoculars have an internal mechanism that compensates for movement and keeps the image you’re
viewing stable and immobile. They help you keep what you’re viewing in the field of vision, and help reduce
eyestrain. The trade off is that because of the added parts, they’re a bit heavier than standard binoculars. But if
you spend a lot of time hiking or boating, a little extra weight is worth being able to see a stabilized image.
When you think of star gazing, you probably immediately think of a telescope. But there are also binoculars that
allow you to see what the night sky has to offer. Astronomy binoculars are usually much larger and heavier than
standard binoculars, so it’s best to use them with a tripod or other mounting device. Your arms would tire very
quickly from trying to hold them up long enough to view the sky. These binoculars are specially made to make best
use of ambient light, giving you clear views in dim conditions. The advantage they have over telescope is they
allow you to see heavenly bodies with both eyes, giving those objects more depth. They also help reduce eyestrain
since you’re using both eyes, and not relying on just one to see everything.
The Monarch Binocular made by Nikon was given a five in ratings. Before any of the other models are considered for
your purchase you may want to see and to learn about the different features the binoculars offer like the
magnification of the lenses, the range of the view, and the ability of the binoculars to be waterproof. There are
many other things that will need to be taken into consideration also.
Most people make the assumption that it’s best to get the highest magnification they can for their binoculars. This
is not quite right. A hand-held binoculars at a high magnification tends to have too much movement for the highly-
magnified image to be useful. Usually, binoculars that have anything more than 10 times magnification should be
mounted on a tripod instead of being held. Hence, if you’re planning to use binoculars without a tripod, you should
stay within the 4-8x magnification range.
The last thing you’d need to consider is the actual weight of the binoculars that you’re buying. For activities
like hiking, or hunting, it’s probably best to acquire a pair of light weight binoculars. Plastic lenses, which
weigh a lot less than their glass counterparts, may be the solution. The tradeoff is that glass lenses perform a
lot better at the same cost, but are heavier and more fragile.

If you are an astronomer or an amateur, your binoculars must have good magnification power and a big objective
lens. It is a good idea to compare the prices and the features of different binoculars. You may consider buying a
cheaper set if the features are comparable, however, if the features do not completely match your needs it would be
unwise to base your decision on only the price of the binocular set.
These features of a binocular can range from a very close distance of 5mm outward to as much as 23mm. Eyeglass
wearers should consider those binoculars with a rating in the 14mm to 23mm range. The separation between short and
long relief tends to be between 14mm and 16mm.
These designations can differ from one manufacturer to another. What may be classified as 14mm by one may be 15mm
to another. And some manufacturers also record ratings as low as 13mm to be long eye relief.
The first purpose of the binoculars eyecups is to provide shade or cover from sunlight, either direct or indirect,
between the eye and the binoculars eyepiece. Providing shade or cover between the eye and the binoculars eyepiece
greatly enhances the clarity and sharpness of the object being viewed through the binoculars by reducing glare onto
the focal lens of the binoculars and the eye. Binocular eyecups should always be in the normal position when
viewing through your binoculars if you are not wearing glasses.
If you are wearing glasses for corrective vision or sunglasses and do not want to remove them before viewing
through your binoculars, fold or twist the binoculars eyecups down before viewing. This will bring the binoculars
closer to your eyes while providing the approximate eye to lens stand-off of the binoculars. When the binoculars
eyecups are in the down position for glasses use, the binocular eyecups provide very little cover from outside
light sources.
If you wear glasses it is recommended that you remove your glasses when viewing through your binoculars if your
vision is such that you can focus clearly without them. For most people that wear glasses this is no problem, but
for some, especially those with astigmatisms, this is not always the best situation for clear, sharp binocular
viewing. Viewing through your binoculars without your glasses when you can still focus clearly will offer you the
best viewing through your binoculars as far as eye relief, stand-off and light glare are concerned.

Founded in 1917, the Nikon Corporation is still the first choice for most photographers and image lovers after almost 100 years! It was originally called the “Japan Optical Industries Corporation” but was later renamed as Nikon Corporation in 1988. Nikon is a Japanese corporate company with its headquarters in Tokyo, the capital city of Japan and is under the umbrella of Mitsubishi Group. This multinational company specializes in imaging and optics.

Besides cameras, the most popular Nikon product, the company is also engaged in the production of a number of other interesting artifacts including microscopes, binoculars, measurement instruments etc. The Nikon cameras range over a wide variety. There are four popular series which define Nikon cameras. The Nikon F series deals with the SLR cameras of 135 films and the D series comprises of the digital cameras.

The Coolpix series of compact digital cameras is a comparatively new one whereas the Nikonos is a special series of under water cameras. The first Nikon branded camera was introduced in 1948. Before this, Nikon was involved n the production of optical lenses and other optical equipment used in the manufacture of binoculars, cameras, microscopes, etc.

During the Second World War, Nikon with its large number of factories supplied binoculars, bombsights and such other useful equipment to the Japanese military. The first Nikon F series SLR cameras was introduced in 1959 and for the next 30 years, they were one of the most popular cameras used by professional photographers. Later on, Nikon became one of the pioneers of digital camera manufacturers.

The digital cameras revolutionized photography in such an unexpected and remarkable way, that the demand for the Nikon film cameras fell rapidly. Considering the situation, Nikon has presently stopped the production of film cameras and has devoted to the production of digital cameras only. From the very beginning till now, Nikon has continued to produce some of the best cameras of the world.

It has constantly modified its range of products. With the use of newer and improved technologies, Nikon has created such sophisticated and miraculous artifacts that we could not even dream of. Not only for common people and photographers, Nikon has produced cameras and lenses that have been used for scientific research by different organizations.

Nikon was the primary supplier for NASA for its unique and specialized products. Nikon has played a major role in popularizing photography among the common people. Nikon has continuously tried to make photography an easy job for everyone by introducing automatic features in the cameras. It has never failed in its effort to exceed the expectations of its customers and has successfully built up such an extraordinary reputation, that the brand name itself today defines the photographic industry.

From the state-of-the-art Nikon DSLRs to the high-quality and compact Coolpix point-and-shoot line, Nikon cameras are world leader’s in the optics and digital photography technology that captures important events, preserves memories and livens our days with vibrant images.
