At the end of the Copenhagen climate summit sounded the clarion call of global energy conservation. In this context, LED Illumination As a new energy-saving, Environmental protection Alternative technologies, quickly became the government, capital and business condenser focus. As of the end of 2009 China has become the world’s most important production base for LED lighting, while the National Development and Reform Commission in the six ministries jointly issued in October last year, the “semiconductor lighting energy industry view” to vigorously support.

LED lighting can achieve energy saving

Currently, lighting accounts for about 20% of total world energy consumption is about. Statistical data show that only one energy-saving LED street lamps, each able to save about one of the Three Gorges Dam in China issued by the electricity. Because LED lighting

possess the energy, environmental advantages, in recent years to maintain its global production value of more than 20% annual growth, China has launched a green lighting, semiconductor lighting project, “10 City 10 000″ plans to promote the industry development, China’s semiconductor lighting in 2008 nearly 70 billion yuan output value. Also, actively involved in investment capital from various quarters LED industry, investment has grown rapidly, only the first half of 2009 throughout the country launched the LED total investment budget has more than 20 billion yuan.

“Although China’s LED industry investment and capacity expansion is accelerating, LED lighting manufacturers more than 3000, but 70% of which concentrated on the lower part of the integration of applications, the lack of upstream core technologies, and because of generally small-scale enterprises and standards missing, uneven product quality. “According to the Shenzhen Science and Technology Chairman Wu Han Tian Zhen Yue introduction, and now many mainland cities in developing LED lighting demonstration projects and alternative project, but LED lighting is also limited slip road to the district, Walking Street range of applications is limited, in particular, is of varying quality LED lighting products. He said: “I once drove through a rainy city LED demonstration Road, more than 20 bar LED lights shine only 23.”

LED lights use low cost At present, there is “definitely the high cost of new technology,” the error, making LED lighting applications in the domestic market is urgently to be popular. “In fact, that the high cost of LED lighting is a one-sided views.” Wu Zhen Yue told reporters, is now widely used high-pressure road lighting Sodium lamp Just a few hundred dollars, LED Energy Saving Lamp Will have to one with a few thousand dollars, to infer the high cost of LED does not hold. Wu Zhen Yue further explained: “The traditional lighting methods require the laying of cables, this is a cheap cost, at the same time, the conventional sodium lamp life is short, generally about a year to be replaced Lighting And post-repair maintenance cost is very high, these costs are counting, LED lighting costs than traditional sodium lights would not be much difference. ”

“LED lighting with less power consumption, long life and other advantages. A traditional sodium or less a year to consume electricity worth about 2,300, while natural to LED lights using solar energy, wind energy, fluid energy, total savings this part of the cost. to John Field of technology use LED lights conservative five-year terms, one could save 11,500 yuan. “Wu Zhen Yue such an account for our calculations. “In addition, LED lights can also be naturally stable lighting effect to rain.” Wu Zhen Yue think, LED lighting energy industry should strengthen technological innovation and accelerate development.

Few technological wonders have made life and communication easier than the cell phone. So long as one is within a good calling range, you can contact anybody, anytime, while traveling. Having a cell phone is especially handy in emergencies, should your car break down or should you get lost in an unfamiliar place. People without cell phones have the convenience of using pre-paid calling cards, so as not to worry about long distance phone bills. Just enter a passcode and talking to anybody you wish.

Due to their ease of use, such items have become the target of thieves.

Phone Card Fraud

While one might not think there is much benefit to stealing a simple phone card, people are finding a way to make money from stolen authorization codes. Whether you are using a card for which there is a monthly bill or a pre-paid card, once a thief has the pass code he can make calls or engage in illegal “call-sell” operations, selling long distance time to others and pocketing the profits.

How does a thief obtain an authorization code? Think about the last time you used a phone in a public place. You might have been at the airport, bus station, or your hotel. Maybe you used a pay phone or your cell, and maybe you didn’t notice the possibility that you were being watched. Thieves are becoming craftier in their surveillance skills; if one doesn’t linger around the pay phone, pretending to wait to use it, one just might be watching you with binoculars or a zoom lens, taking note of the numbers you punch into the phone. You probably wouldn’t know until the end of the month, if you are using a billed card, and find a list of calls you didn’t make.

Always be alert when making a phone call in public. Shield the phone’s keypad from sight, and keep any calling cards close. Better yet, if you can memorize your authorization code, do so. If you have to speak your code into the phone, keep your voice low and out of others’ earshot. If you have a cell phone, program any code numbers into your speed dialing system.

Phone Travel Scams

It’s early in the morning, and you’re snoozing in your hotel bed when the phone rings. The clerk at the front desk claims there is an authorization problem with your credit cards, perhaps their number is wrong. Could you give him your credit card number for confirmation? Without thinking, you do and go back to sleep, annoyed by this inconvenience on the hotel’s part.

What you might not realize is that you could be further inconvenienced by a whopping credit card bill.

We are hearing more and more about this particular scam targeted at travelers. A room is picked at random and the traveler tricked into surrendering valuable information, allowing the thief control of your identity. Assuming you spend minimal time dealing with hotel staff, you aren’t going to know the voice of the day clerk, so you don’t think much of it. It’s an easy trap, but it can be avoided. Never volunteer any personal information over the phone while away – no name, credit card numbers, anything. If you feel the call is suspicious, hang up immediately and go down to the front desk to confirm if any calls were made by them to your room. Always best to be safe.

Cell Phone Safety

As cell phones get smaller and smaller with the new technology, it’s a wonder we don’t lose them more often! Yet, it still happens, and it is important to immediately report a lost or stolen phone to your service carrier as soon as possible to avoid incurring fraudulant charges. With travelers, too, came the problem of cell phone “cloning” fraud – this occurs when a thief gets a hold of a specific cell phone’s signal and duplicates it into another phone. The thief’s phone is then recognized as your phone, allowing the thief to make illegals calls on your bill. As the major wireless companies are taking counteractive measures against this type of theft, cloning fraud should not be the problem it used to be; nonetheless, it is always suggested to consult with your wireless company about fraud.

Vigilance and proper use of your phone and phone cards can prevent theft while away from home.

Because I do in fact enjoy socializing with expatriates such as myself, I have become, in a way, a tourist savant. My neighborhood plays home to several large and glitzy hotels frequented by travelers the world over. Large busses line up outside these hotels, loading and unloading what I can only describe as sightseeing cattle—hundreds and hundreds of similarly-pale individuals who, like mosquitoes, appear to be drawn to bright lights and sweet beverages. Seeing these groups day after day—in restaurants, around offices, at the bar—I have learned to make a number of subtle distinctions that I once quite naively overlooked.

Americans are unmistakable. We’re usually the fattest of the whole bunch and enjoy being loud enough so that in case you did not see our hefty guts, you will most certainly hear them. We generally make little effort to learn the language past the words “hola”, “gracias”, and “cerveza” and when do make the effort to put together phrases, they usually leak out of our mouths sounding butchered and maimed, like they’ve been passed through a hand-powered meat grinder. We bathe in the tubs of excess: our burgers stacked extra high, our digital binoculars donned with super zoom.

In El Cangrejo, hungry taxi drivers love to prey upon American-looking folks such as myself. Beyond just driving taxis, these entrepreneurs are also concierges of sorts: able to point you to the finest strip clubs and massage parlors the city has to offer. They’ll present me a smorgasbord delights as if my simple walk to the grocery store was a jaunt through Sin City. “Hey brother,” they always say. “You want to see some beautiful ladies fighting in oil right now?” As I graciously decline, commenting that it is only ten in the morning and I have some grocery shopping to do, they often go for a last ditch effort: “Brother, I can get you all the beer you ever wanted!” Things like ladies fighting in oil and all the beer I ever wanted, are all at the drop of a dime for a tourist like me, and for this luxury, I feel extremely fortunate.

To blend in a bit more, I made myself a list of things which, if avoided, can spare me some embarrassment and help assimilate quicker. First off, asking where another tourist is from is a no no. The second someone says to me “and where are you from” or “so how are you enjoying your vacation”, they have given themselves away. They refuse to acknowledge that not everyone, even if it may look that way a lot of the time, is down here on vacation. Wearing anything obnoxiously touristy, such as mola-stitched shirts or the all-too-original Panama hat is just asking for it as well. Oh, and if you’re from Europe, please don’t wear your Capri pants or racing style velcro shoes, because they’re just about as obvious as strapping a Guinness to your head and singing football chants.

Panama is also seeing a lot of Canadians, whose “ehs” are really getting under my skin. They take up all the space at the bars asking for Labatts and requesting that the bar back change the channel to some meaningless hockey bout. Busloads of Canadians come in everyday asking if it’s OK to eat the lettuce, a question I’ve now come to respond to with “actually no, it’s not OK to eat the lettuce here. It contains salmonella and will start humming away at your intestine if you ingest even a single leaf.”

Having been in Panama for some time now, most would think I’ve become a local. Most would think I’ve developed a taste for fried hotdogs for breakfast and pickled quail eggs at soccer matches. Most would think I would’ve made lots of Panamanian friends by now, my skin thought to resemble a light beige horse saddle. But none of that is true. I may be considered a Panamanian in some respects: but truly, I’m a tourist at heart.

Chris Palsho is a self proclaimed jack of all trades, expert in none. He does lots of Panama travel as well as Panama real estate.

Hiking is an endeavor that a person can undertake that can fill so many voids and do so many positive things for you and your body. This hobby or sport, however you want to classify it, is something that everybody should try at least once.

There is so much good in hiking, starting with the beauty and scenery only nature can provide. Taking in a nature walk or hike can do so much to revive your spirit and refresh a tired and fatigued mind. I love to get out, smell the fresh air and remind myself that all of my problems are actually very small.

A good hiking trail can put things in perspective for you. The stresses of life can become such massive worries as we allow ourselves to magnify their importance and impact on our lives. Taking in the vast and breathtaking scenery in nature can quickly put our problems back in perspective. Nature makes us feel small again and our problems seem smaller. A breath of fresh air washes away difficulties.

Getting the blood moving through the body has a profound effect on our minds and bodies as well. The heart pumps blood and oxygen through our systems reviving those beaten down organs and muscles. This also livens up the brain and gets things to firing again like they should. Take deep breaths and fill those lungs with fresh oxygen. Your mind and body will instantly perk up.

Taking on a hiking trip requires a bit of preplanning. Now, I would not say that you would have to hit every sporting goods store in town and build a pickup bed full of supplies to go on a trail hike. But, a few things are necessary for your safety as well as your enjoyment.

Hiking boots or shoes are a must. Make sure you get a good brand that fits you well. Don’t buy them a half inch small to make your foot look smaller. You will regret this later. You have my word on that. You want your foot to be able to expand and breathe fully. Now it should be mostly snug, but the toes should not be jammed into the end. A good pair of hiking boots or shoes should have a good grip for traction and stable walking.

Layered clothing is another requirement if it is a bit brisk. You will not be chilly for long once you get moving. The body has this amazing method of heating itself up quite a bit as the blood starts flowing. You should be able to strip off that jacket and store it easily in a fanny pack or a small pack worn on the back.

I always take a hydration system like the ones made famous by Camel Bak. These things are very nice to have and super easy to carry. The long tube just stretches over your shoulder and is handy at all times. When hiking, do not chug down your water. Make yourself take sips every five or ten minutes or so. You should be receiving a constant supply of water. It does not hurt to drink about a quart of water before you initiate a hike as well.

I bring a few other items along to make my hiking trip a bit more enjoyable. A compact pair of binoculars is nice to have to zoom in on the scenery and wild life. I also bring along a small digital camera so I can record some of the beauty. These photos make nice background for my computer back at the house. Bring sunglasses and sunscreen if you tend to burn. A high carbohydrate snack is nice to have for a shot of energy and fuel for the body.

Get online on the Internet and do some research on some local hiking trails. There are some great hiking trail guides available online that provide a wealth of information such as location, intensity, distance and geographical terrain types. Weather can be checked as well so you don’t get yourself into a nasty storm.

Many of these online guides will provide you with a free trial period before they charge anything. When the charges kick in, they are commonly insignificant; maybe just enough to make the web site owner enough money to justify his or her efforts.

Well, this wraps up your quick and hasty hiking pointer article. Remember, the idea is to enjoy nature and allow yourself to drift away. Do not take off on that trail to brainstorm about your job or problems. Let them go. I assure you; nature will not let you keep the stress for too long.

Good luck, be safe and drink lots of water.

Whether you’re a local traveler in Africa or a foreigner visiting the beauty of the African nations, Zambia safari is a wonderful and exciting way to spend a holiday. The country provides a plenty of entertaining options for visitors to entertain their senses with a variety of animals. All you have to do is to book your ticket, and choose your tour operator to have the finest trip of your life. However, it is important to decide what to pack for enjoying the best trip in Africa.

Generally, Zambia safaris are planned ahead of the schedule & done inland, including possibilities of lakes, rivers or dams, as the weather in the country is usually very hot, especially during the summer season. Therefore, it is vital to keep an effective sun-cream with a high SPF level to protect you from sun burn.

Secondly, you need to keep good quality binoculars as a lot of animals/birds might be in the distance. Some of the interesting African animals keep themselves behind the bush and having a zoom lens will help you spot them more easily. Cameras are also important so that you can capture some of the interesting moments of your journey. Also, you must take along extra batteries and film rolls, not to miss a chance to document your journey.

Choose your cloth carefully while going on a safari, the first thing that pops into your head might be khaki shorts and a beige shirt. Visions of being a colonial explorer, hacking back the bush and taming an elephant might work well in the movies, but not so well in reality.

Choose the light colored clothes and packing a good pair of hiking boots is also a nice idea. And although having a penknife is a good compensation for a bush knife, chances are your guide will have that angle covered.

Zambia safari is the most exciting and enthralling opportunity for every wildlife lover.

London is a major tourist destination for many visitors to the UK and offers some popular well known tourist attractions such as the London Eye, Madame Tussauds, The London Dungeon and many more. However many visitors miss out on the best bits of the city so please read on for some hidden London gems that are a must for any visitor.

If you are in the area of Hammersmith, head along to the London Wetland Centre in Barnes. Almost 100 acres of reclaimed reservoir offers one of the best wildlife and wetlands centres in the country. For anyone interested in nature and wildfowl this makes a great visit and I highly recommend taking a pair of strong binoculars and a camera with a zoom lens. Given the open nature of this attraction you will also want to visit on a fine day.

Why not then head to Baker Street and ride a tour bus highlighting some of the not so well known features of the central London area? There is no better way to see the sights of London. Jump aboard a hop-on, hop-off bus and be guided through London past and present by an experienced guide. Buses depart every half an hour or so so its a great destination to pop along to if you do not have a specific schedule.

Portobello Road market is a famous antiques and marketplace about 10 minutes from Ladbroke Grove Tube station. Portobello Road has been a market since the 19th century – but is well known for its antiques in the 1950s. Today there are many different stalls offering everything from fruit and drinks to antiques, posters, clothes, ceramics and more.

For those that are interested in Wine and wine making – head to the “Vinopolis”. This is an amazing two and a half acre space devoted to the world of wine, wine tasting and its associated pleasures. The best way to access is via London Bridge. You can probably spend two hours or so browsing the exhibits and listening to the audio commentaries. You do need to love your wines to find this a place of interest.

Finally head to the British Museum. Get off the tube at Tottenham court road or Holborn. The museum is visited by nearly 5 million people a year and houses around 7 million objects, the British Museum is considered one of the greatest museums in the world and is visited by people worldwide. Often overlooked this museum is not to be missed and of course visiting is completely free. I would also recommend spending a full day exploring the museum.

There are hundreds more less well known places and attractions to visit in London and I highly recommend starting with a days pass for the London Underground and heading towards Westminster as a starting point. Don’t forget to take a tube map. Be sure to roughly plan your visit, and check the National Rail timetables if you need to catch a connecting train out of the city.

A bad choice of flight left me very little time to collect my hired car and race out of Johannesburg city before the afternoon peak traffic congestion. Slipping out just as the congestion started, I had 3 ½ hours easy drive on good tarred road to get to the western entrance to Madikwe Game Reserve at Wonderboom gate. The friendly security guard at the gate greeted and welcomed me. After signing in, I entered the game reserve and enjoyed my own little game drive en route to my lodge where I would stay for a night. Ah! How nice it was to be back in the bush! Peace and quiet!

On arrival at the beautiful Impodimo Game Lodge, Steve, the owner, gave me a warm welcome, offering a cool cocktail to quench my thirst. The security guard at Wonderboom Gate communicated my arrival to Impodimo Lodge so Steve was at the entrance to lodge waiting for me when I arrived. My luggage was transferred to my luxury suite and Steve gave me a quick orientation tour of the lodge.

My late arrival meant I missed the afternoon game drive and sundowner drinks in the bush. All game lodges are booked on an all inclusive basis, including all meals, 2 game drives per day and some lodges include drinks. My pre dinner drinks were enjoyed on the balcony overlooking the open plains of woodland and grassland below. A popular waterhole near the lodge kept us entertained as game strolled in to drink. A delicious dinner was enjoyed in a traditional boma, our dinner tables placed around a roaring bon fire under the clear African sky.

The unfenced camp meant that I required an escort to my room by an armed game ranger. What luxury! I felt like a real lady! My luxury suite had its own private deck looking onto the open game area, a large colourful four-poster double bed draped with mosquito netting, a beautiful bathroom and a great outdoor shower.

An early morning wake up call had me jumping up in excitement. It had been years since I was last in the bushveld surrounded by game. I was looking forward to the open vehicle game drive. We enjoyed a hot cup of coffee and some delicious snacks before heading out on the drive. Roddy, our chatty game ranger ensured that we enjoyed a great gaming experience with spottings of lion, elephant, hyena, black rhino, black backed jackal and numerous very colourful birds species.

We returned to the lodge to enjoy a full buffet breakfast attractively arranged in the bar area at the swimming pool. As we sat down with our first serving, a small herd of elephants strolled up to the swimming pool just a few metres away from us and started drinking out of the pool. Wow! What an encounter! Who needs a game drive when you can sit in comfort at the lodge and watch the game come to you?

I decided to vary my stay in Madikwe by including 2 different lodges to stay at. After breakfast at Impodimo and a bit of time with the ellies, I then made my way to Mateya Lodge, a 5 star experience like no other! With immaculate attention to detail, the lodge is intricately designed, has magnificent arts and crafts from all over Africa and offers 6 star service! Exquisite!

On arrival I was welcomed with hot hand towels and an exotic cocktail, my hired car driven to the car park and my luggage carried to my suite. I was invited in for lunch on the deck overlooking open plains and a water hole where game roamed freely.

After lunch, I was lead along a raised wooden walkway to my private suite. It was more like a house! It was huge! The spacious, beautifully decorated bedroom opened up to my own private deck and plunge pool overlooking the open plains where the game roamed. The bathroom, almost the size of the bedroom, complete with all the luxuries fit for a queen!

After a quick nap in the comfort of my suite and a dip in my private plunge pool, I joined the rest of the guests at the lodge for high tea. Aware of the 5-course dinner that awaited us in the evening and having already enjoyed 2 large meals today, I struggled to taste some of the delicious looking snacks at high tea! The atmosphere was ignited with excited chatter between the game ranger and the other guests. Being foreigners they had not experienced the Africa wildlife before and were enthusiastic about the afternoon game drive, which would take place after high tea.

Equipped with binoculars, mammal and bird books and an experienced game ranger we set off in our open 4×4 safari vehicle for our afternoon drive through the reserve. Our spottings were excellent and included sightings of lions, elephants, a leopard on a kill, a small family of bat eared foxes and hyena. My 300 zoom lens allowed some good close up photos. After the drive we all gathered for dinner on the deck and shared our excitement of our days sightings. The meal was exquisite and the company was fun, drinks flowed until late in the evening.

After a good night’s sleep I took some time to enjoy the luxuries of my suite. Top quality bath products in a steaming bubble bath had me lulled to a light sleep. A luxury skin lotion pampered my body and prepared me for a new day.

Breakfast was yet another magnificent display of good food, a huge selection of tasty things to choice from.

My time in the lap of luxury had come to an end. I had a plane to catch to get me back home by the evening. “Farewell until next time” I said!

Are you taking your family on a camping trip? Looking for fun things to do while on your vacation? Here are a few ideas; some of these ideas are suitable for campgrounds, others for wilderness, some for both.

Play Hide And Seek

No place on earth makes a better hide and seek game than a good patch of woods. Try playing after dark using headlamps and/or flashlights. Place a fire or light at your campsite, and instruct all players to keep that in sight so they can easily return to camp. After you locate a hiding place, turn your flashlight off. Make sure the person who is it has a strong enough flashlight to locate the other players.

Stalk Wildlife

Go out early in the morning or in the evening looking for wildlife. Try to find areas that wildlife frequent, such as fields, streams, salt licks, etc where there are not a lot of people. Take binoculars and a camera. If you have a camera with a tripod and good zoom, you may be able to snap some good photos. You can either actively stalk the wildlife, or site and wait where you expect it to come to.

Play Practical Jokes

Camping trips are highly conducive to practical jokes. Here are a few classics:

When hiking, run up ahead, out of sight of the group. Hide beside the trail and wait for them to pass. Then sneak up behind them.

Place rocks in other peoples backpacks.

Fill someone’s water bottle with something clear, yet unpleasant. Make sure you take along an extra bottle of water for them so they don’t have to go thirsty.

Move someone’s tent while they are asleep.

Use a squirt bottle to fake peeing on their tent.

Have An Orienteering Competition

Mark out a trail using a compass and markers. Make each leg of the trail long enough so the markers are not visible from Record the bearings for each turn, and give the instructions to the contestants. The first person to locate the end point wins.

Play Outdoor Games

The number of outdoor games you can play are endless. Everything from football to freeze tag to relay races. You can have a blast playing simple games with your family and friends. One particularly fun game to play while camping is capture the flag. This game can be played in fields, woods, or a variety of terrains. The more adventurous the territory, the more fun the game!

Go Sightseeing

Most camping spots have lots of things to see in the nearby area. Mountains, rivers, caverns, lakes, oceans – there are often lots of fun things to do. Check for an area visitors center to find destinations of interest, or ask a park ranger or other knowledgeable person.

The variety of things you can do while camping is nearly endless. With space, a few pieces of equipment, and imagination, you can create all kinds of games and have amazing amounts of fun! Make sure you invite plenty of friends and family to join you – the more the merrier!

Climbing a Mountain to most people remains a dream of a lifetime, however this turns out to be a bad experience for those who rush to do it with minimal preparations and knowledge. Most tour companies have tours to some of the biggest mountains in Kenya like Kilimanjaro and Mt Kenya.
This offers you an opportunity to experience Mountain climbing but first let’s look at some of the tips that may help you enjoy your trip up and down of any major Mountain:

Ensure you relax the night before the trip up the mountain; this helps your body to refresh as you set yourself ready to go up the next morning. Carry a guide up the mountain if you are not familiar with the area. This will ensure you don’t get lost on the way. Most mountains are very hot when climbing during the day and very cold at night. However some are very cold throughout especially those covered with snow like Mt Kenya and Kilimanjaro.

Going up such mountains require warm clothes to keep your body warm and heavy boots to beat the snow covered tracks. Most peaks cannot be reached in a day and so you should prepare on accommodation during the night. A good water proof easy to set-up tent is a viable option. Carry a compass, a whistle, a torch, sun tan lotion, aspirin and any other additional important personal that can make your trip comfortable. For those who love nature, a pair of lightweight binoculars handy when you want to admire the distant views on your way, a camera with zoom lenses is important if you want to carry the memorable features with you back. Carry enough water to quench your thirst; this depends on distance being covered and the temperatures during the day. Climb the mountain during the day when its safe and you can see all the game. Though most of them are not dangerous and may run away on sight of humans an occasional encounter with rogue elephants, buffaloes, lions will certainly not end well. Make friendly noises as you move through the bushy areas to alert the game of your approach. Do not disturb any herd of animals in the bush, let them move on their own or get an alternate route around them. Carry some medical supplies that may be needed to dress bruises and small injuries. Enjoy your trip up and down, a step at a time.

Ski Town USA is getting rowdy. In Steamboat Springs, Colorado, the approaching ski season is in the air. Just driving down the main drag, you can see and feel the difference. Gear swaps and sales, classes at the rec center specifically designed to get your skiing legs back, and my personal favorite- the roller-blade inspired “roller-skis” that dedicated souls all over town are using to cruise up and down the cement slopes. There is no denying it- this is a ski town. But there’s another snow sport that has a strong and growing presence in Steamboat. It’s one that may not be noticed as you pass through. In garages all over town tune-ups and repairs are being performed, snowmobiles are being prepped. Snowmobiling has been gaining momentum as one of the area’s most popular winter activities. And slednecks, (defined by the Urban Dictionary as “a person from a mountain state that tears it up on a snowmobile”) are enthusiastic about the promise of another epic season here in northwest Colorado. Skiers and snowmobilers alike await the snow.

A central reason for the prevelance of snowmobiling in this area is Rabbit Ears Pass, in the Routt National Forest. The Pass is the snowmobile Mecca of Colorado. X-games competitors frequent the area and the longest snowmobile jump in history was recorded there. If you were to sit on the summit and get out your binoculars you would be able to spot numerous enthusiasts enjoying the area. On the highway’s edge there are trailers of all sizes and shapes. In the distance are guided tours that resemble ants on a march as they zoom up and down the hills. And hopefully, if you know where the pros hang out, you’ll catch some wild jumps and cliff dropping. Rabbit Ears Pass is simply a phenomenal area to ride. If offers a sublime combination of accessabily, diverse terrain and an abundance of snow.

Accessibility is foremost. Poor access makes great terrain useless. This is why a crowded and expensive ski resort is more popular than the thousands of miles of wide-open backcountry. For most of us, our playtime is limited and we would rather not spend it en route. From Steamboat, the Pass and endless snowmobiling is a mere twelve miles east. Riding is as simple as parking in one of the several lots lining the highway and unloading your sled. For destination travelers who have a healthy budget to spend in satisfying their snowmobiling appetite, an airport lies thirty minutes west of town and Steamboat has plenty of accommodations to suit any tastes.

The diversity of the terrain is tremendous. Beginners have groomed trails. Intermediate riders have single track and hills with varying degrees of steepness. The people out there with a death wish- they have cliffs. And everyone gets to enjoy countless open meadows on powder days. This assortment brings a wide array of experience levels to the Pass. It’s also a wonderful fit for commercial tours. Guided tours blend excitement and safety. They also help to ensure the proliferation of snowmobiling by introducing people to the sport. Some of these newcomers will become addicts and, like the rest of us, spend lots of money supporting their habit and the industry.

Finally, the white fluffy icing on the proverbial cake. The delectable snow. Aptly icknamed “champagne powder”, the snow that falls on the Yampa Valley is renowned for being lighter than that of other regions in Colorado. Lighter snow intensifies that floating feeling, the ultimate perk of snow sports. Sure, speed has some allure, and leaning into an impeccably carved turn can feel like cheating the laws of physics, but to float is undeniably divine.

Next time you and your family pack your sweaters and mittens and head for the mountains, consider Steamboat Springs as a destination. The exceptional ski resort draws a crowd all on its own, but the availability of many other snow sports makes this town unique. Trek off the beaten path and into the wilderness on a snowmobile and return with tales to tell.
