Nikon wasn’t the company’s name until 1988.

Prior to this, the company was officially called Nippon Kogaku K.K. – many people believe the name changed earlier, but it wasn’t until the late 80’s. 1st April 1988, to be precise, Nikon Corporation was officially (re)born.

Of course, they had been using Nikon as a trademarked brand for many years (history suggests the name Nikon was first invented in the mid 1940’s), so why did they eventually decide to switch? Well, this little story direct from Nikon’s website may shed some light.
Then-president Shigetada Fukuoka met with former French President Jacques Chirac. On hearing the name Nippon Kogaku Kogyo, Mr Chirac simply tilted his head in bewilderment. When Mr. Fukuoka said the word “Nikon,” however, the Parisian mayor understood immediately.
President Fukuoka said “From hereon, I don’t want us to be limited by the name Kogaku (“optics”). Let us work toward even greater advancements.”

Nikon didn’t manufacture their first camera until 1948.

Thirty-one years after the company was founded by the merging of three separate optical manufacturers in 1917, Nikon launched their first camera, the Nikon I. Prior to this, Nikon made lenses under the Nikkor brand, along with binoculars and microscopes.

Demand for the camera in Japan was huge, but it wasn’t without it’s problems. A rush to manufacture left the camera somewhat unreliable, with the film advance often failing to work, which led to many customer complaints and forced Nikon into financial difficulties. However, they rebounded with 1949’s Nikon M and 1950’s Nikon S, then the S2, SP and finally the classic Nikon F SLR, quality and reliability improving with each model.

Nikon originally made all of their now arch-rival Canon’s lenses.

Canon’s first cameras were inexpensive Japanese Leica clones, and in 1934 it announced a 35mm rangefinder called the Kwanon. The Kwanon was just a prototype never put into production – it was followed by their first commercial camera, the Hansa Canon, in 1936. Canon had one problem, however – they didn’t have any experience of making lenses, so they contracted Nippon Kogaku Kogyo, already a proven optical designer and manfufacturer, and used Nikkor lenses. The Hansa Canon actually shipped as standard with a Nikkor 50mm f/3.5 lens.

In fact, a large part of the first Canon camera was made by Nikon – Nippon Kogaku was responsible for the lens, the lens mount, the viewfinder, and the complete rangefinder mechanism. Canon did start developing lenses in 1937, but they weren’t available until after WWII, and they didn’t launch their fast 50mm Serenar f/2 until 1947.

When launched in 1959, the Nikon F cost an average of three months salary.

We may think that we have it bad with the price of today’s digital SLRs, but the first Nikon SLR cost 67,000 Yen – three times the salary of a Japanese government employee at the time. They still managed to sell a million of them over the next 15 years!

This was the camera that introduced us to the F mount – the very same mount (albeit with added features, especially in the electronic age) that is still in use today. This mount was revolutionary at the time, having a huge diameter in comparison to it’s rangefinder peers, which allowed Nikkor F lenses to be far more resistant to mechanical vignetting.

Nikon’s first Digital SLR, the D1, was developed from scratch in just two years.

We may take for granted now that a new camera will be digital, but just over 10 years ago this was certainly not the case. Although the first Coolpix (the Coolpix 100) was produced in 1997, Nikon’s classic D1 wasn’t introduced until 1999.

The order to produce a DSLR came from Nikon’s president in 1997, and engineers responded by saying it would take four years, three at a minimum. They were given two.

The result was a 2.7mp DSLR with many features bettered by even today’s entry-level cameras (and also by it’s contemporary digicams; the Coolpix 100 was 3mp), but at the time it was revolutionary. The D1 quickly displaced Kodak from dominance of the DSLR market, and sales exceeded the target of 100,000 bodies per year even at it’s US$5500 asking price. With the D1, Nikon’s market share eclipsed that of Canon. Strangely, the camera used the NTSC colorspace, not the SRGB or AdobeRGB we use today.

Marketing Management Tasks
These core concepts and others provide the input for a set of tasks that make up successful marketing management.

Zeus, Inc. (name disguised), operates in several industries, including chemicals, cameras, and film. The company is organized into SBUs. Corporate management is considering what to do with its Atlas camera division. At present, Atlas produces a range of 35 mm and digital cameras. The market for cameras is intensely competitive. Although Zeus has a sizable market share and is producing much revenue for the company, the 35 mm market itself is growing very slowly and its market share is slipping. In the faster-growing digital camera segment, Zeus is facing strong competition and has been slow to gain sales. Zeus’s corporate management wants Atlas’s marketing group to produce a strong turnaround plan for the division. Marketing management has to come up with a convincing marketing plan, sell corporate management on the plan, and then implement and control it.

Developing marketing strategies and plans
The first task facing Atlas is to identify its potential long-run opportunities given its market experience and core competencies. Atlas can design its cameras with better features. It can also considering a line of video cameras or it can use its core competency in optics to design a line of binoculars and telescopes. Whichever direction it chooses, it must develop concrete market plans that specify the marketing strategy and tactics going forward.

Capturing marketing insights
To understand what is happening inside and outside company, Atlas needs a reliable marketing information system; it will want to closely motor its marketing environment.
Atlas’s microenvironment consists of all the players 10 affect the company’s ability to produce and sell cameras-suppliers, marketing inter diaries, customers, and competitors. Its macro environment consists of demographic, economic, physical, technological, political-legal, and social-cultural forces that affect sales and profits.

Atlas also needs a dependable marketing research system. Marketing research is an indispensable tool for assessing buyer wants and behavior and actual and potential market size. An important part of gathering environmental information includes measuring market potential and forecasting future demand. To transform marketing strategy into market: programs marketing managers must make basic decisions on marketing expenditures, marketing activities, and marketing allocation. How many dollars should support Atlas’s or three camera lines? Direct versus distributor sales? Direct-mail advertising versus trade-magazine advertising? East Coast markets versus West Coast markets? To make these allocations, marketing managers may use sales-response functions that show how sales d profits would be affected by the amount of money spent in each application.

Connecting with customers
Atlas must consider how to best create value for its chosen target markets and develop strong, profitable, long-term relationships with customers. To do so, Atlas needs to understand consumer markets. How many house holds plan to buy cameras? Who buys and why do they buy? What are they looking for in the way of features and prices? Where do they shop? What are their images: different brands? How does the digital segment differ from the 35 mm segment? Atlas also sells cameras to business markets, including large corporations, professional firms, retailers, and government agencies. Purchasing agents or buying committees make the decisions. Atlas needs to gain a full understanding of how organizational buyers buy. It needs a sales force that is well trained in presenting product benefits.

Atlas will not want to market to all possible customers. Modern marketing practice calls for dividing the market into major market segments, evaluating each segment, and targeting those market segments that the company can best serve.

BUILDING STRONG BRANDS
Atlas must understand the strengths and weaknesses of the Zeus brand with customers. Is it so strongly associated with certain technologies that it could not be used to brand new products in related categories? Is its 35 mm film heritage a detriment in the digital camera market? Suppose Atlas decides to focus on the consumer market and develop a positioning strategy. Should Atlas position its cameras as the “Cadillac” brand, offering superior cameras at a premium price with excellent service and strong advertising? Should it build a simple, low-priced camera aimed at more price-conscious consumers? Should it develop a medium-quality, medium priced camera? After launch the product’s strategy will need modification at the different stages in the product life cycle: introduction, growth, maturity, and decline. Furthermore, strategy choice will depend on whether the firm is a market leader, challenger or follower. Atlas must also pay close attention to competitors, anticipating its competitors’ moves and knowing how to react quickly and decisively. It may want to initiate some surprise moves, in which case it needs to anticipate how its competitors will respond.

A Good Day to Go Birding

I stand in my kitchen, coffee cup in my hand. Like many mornings, I beat my alarm. No, I didn’t use a hammer. I mean that I’m awake before it goes off. I’m already dressed, boots and birding vest on. The vest pockets are already filled with my field guides, checklist, notebook and pen, compass and map. My binoculars and spotting scope already carefully stowed in the car. Coffee’s good this morning. I need to get my hat and coat. I checked the weather forecast last night (the internet is my friend): cool crisp morning will give way to sunshine and a bit of wind. I’ll grab my sunglasses just in case.

As light seeps into my backyard, the feeders and bird bath already draw visitors. There are robins on the grass; goldfinches and house finches at the feeder. A wren flits in the Rose-a-Sharon near the bath. Stealing into the yard from the ravine’s edge is a flock of Dark-eyed Juncos.

Camera…I have to get my camera. Maybe, there will be a chance at a good shot. I grab my cell phone, which I’ll carry only in case “someone wants or needs me”.

A bottle of water and an apple for a snack; I’ve got to go. It’s a good day to go birding.

Today there is a cut throat competition in the market. Almost every second company wants to keep an upper hand on its competitors and in order to do that they are ready to go any extent. Though the list of such companies is quite a big one but that doesn’t mean that all the companies do the same. There still are companies which have managed to keep themselves out of this blind race and their main objective is to concentrate on their own work rather than pulling other’s leg to move ahead of it. Customers satisfaction tops the priority list of such companies and probably that is why people give weightage to these brands when they go out in the market to get something new for them or for others. When a list of such companies would be prepared, Nikon India would surely get a very respectable place.

The past of the company is not less interesting than its present. Nikon is a Japanese company which came into picture in the year 1917 however at that time it was not known by the same name. People knew it as Nippon Kogaku Tokyo K.K. but later on, in 1988 the company was renamed to its present name and since then it worked really hard to make a special place for itself in the hearts of the people. There are many products such as cameras, microscopes, spectacle lenses, binoculars and many more which are sold under the same brand name.

Not many people know that the company helped the Japanese military a lot by providing them products such as binoculars, bomb sights, lenses, periscopes etc and in order to meet the needs of its army, the company grew in size to nineteen factories with 23,000 employees. Once the war was over, Nikon returned back to its original business of serving the people.

Nikon is not a well known brand of Japan only but actually the whole world has accepted it whole heartedly. Indians are very particular when its a question of investing their hard earned money and they too hardly think twice before going ahead with the idea of buying anything rolled out of the company. This is the kind of reputation enjoyed by Nikon in India.

Hunting itself has been a hobby for those who love to explore the outdoors. Night hunting has gained in popularity among people who enjoy the rush and excitement of chasing after prey. Not know what is hiding in the dark is what makes a night hunting trip even more exciting. In the absence of light, tracking, catching, and killing prey is much more difficult.

Night vision devices give hunters an advantage over their prey in the field. These night vision devices or NVDs increase a hunter’s visual acuity resulting in increased success. Night vision devices come in the form of binoculars, monoculars, goggles and even rifle scopes . With these devices, hunters get a clearer view of what is lurking in the dark.

Be an Invisible Night Hunting Expert – Understand How Night Vision Devices Work

Night vision devices or NVD can help hunting enthusiast by gathering light from the moon, the stars, and other possible light sources and centering it on the front lens to give your camera a clearer image of what is hiding in the dark. Night vision equipment gathers light and then directs light into the photocathode tube which can convert the photons to electrons.

After the electron conversion takes place, a host of electrical and chemical process will multiply the number of electrons present. After magnification, the electrons are hurled onto a phosphorus screen and the electrons are then converted into light. This process allows you to see the image which appears in a green-hue scene.

Night Vision Device are a Great Treat for a Nighttime Hunting Trip

There are a lot of units and types of night vision devices which hunters can use in scoping out their prey in the dark. Night vision equipment falls into four categories: 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th generation types. You should take note that each of these generations of night vision hunting devices only vary according to the type of light intensifier tube that is used. First generation types are the most popular these days. First generation types are both affordable and most recommended for conventional use.

Night hunting can be an exciting hobby as long as you have the right equipment to back you up. So, give your hunting buddies and plan a night hunting exhibition. Equip yourself with the latest night vision equipment (binoculars, monocular, goggles, or even a scope), dress warm, and pack some beef jerky because your prey will never know what hit ‘em.

Having the right equipment can make or break a hunting exhibition. Don’t come home empty handed because you weren’t prepared.

There are a lot of technologies introduced as ways to improve night vision. One of these is thermal night vision or thermal imaging.

Defining It

Normally, when you’re using a camera, even if its night vision, you would see the image as it is. Of course, it could be because there is enough source of light. However, there are times when its complete dark or the light will not be sufficient to help you determine an image.

Your next best option is the thermal night vision. Rather than using light, it makes use of a broad spectrum of light. Any device with a thermal night vision can capture those that belong to the upper portion. These are colors that are emitted by objects that are hot or warm-blooded such as human body.

Who Uses Thermal Night Vision

With respect to surveillance, thermal night vision is often integrated to covert cameras, so you can still monitor animals, objects, and people that are on your premises. You don’t need to set up lights, since the technology itself will already tell you if there are beings nearby. Thermal night vision devices are also mounted on vehicles of law enforcers, especially when they are on manhunt or when they need to keep track of suspicious cars within the area. Even at significant distance, they can already come up with images of model and maker of a vehicle. You would also find goggles, binoculars, and monoculars with thermal night vision technology. It has also used by soldiers and other military personnel particularly in time of battles.

Thermal imaging can also be used by firefighters when they need to see images despite the smoke, by construction workers who need to check any heat leaks, and by psychologists who observe certain animal and human responses.

The Benefits

Thermal night vision provides quite a number of advantages to users. First, you can catch your suspects in real time. Some surveillance cameras would still have some lag time. As mentioned, with thermal night vision cameras, you can see even in the midst of darkness. After all, this technology does not depend on light but on heat. Moreover, if you know how to read results well, you can instantly determine which ones are inanimate objects and which ones are not. Thermal night vision can still work well even in drastic weather conditions, such as the presence of fog, rain, mist, and haze.

The Downsides

There are, however, some potential issues that you would face when it comes to thermal night vision. On top of the list is the fact that this technology is pretty expensive. Since there are not a lot of equipment that come with thermal night vision, most of them are sold cheap. You also need adequate knowledge to know how to read the different colors that you can see perhaps on your monitor.

Types of Thermal Night Vision Devices

So far, there are two general classifications of thermal night vision devices including night vision monoculars. You have the uncooled and the cooled ones. They differ in a lot of aspects. For instance, if you want something that can definitely last for a very long time, you need to get those thermal night vision equipment that are uncooled. They can work well if you’re in an environment that is room temperature.

Meanwhile, you have the cooled thermal night vision devices. These are far more sensitive than the uncooled ones, so they get easily damaged. Moreover, with their vulnerability, you have to pay a very high tag price. The good thing about them, though, is they can detect a temperature as low as 0.2ºF and even if the object is located around one thousand feet from where you are.

Birdwatching is a passion and starts with the simple idea of observing the different kinds of species of birds. But as the years have progressed and technology develops, more and more bird watching optics have become available on the market and your goal should be to find which one is the best to suit your needs.

Then you could start feeding the birds so that they would stay longer, thus, giving you more time to observe them. An ideal way to do this is with the use of bird feeders and bird baths. To protect the welfare of the birds, you could also plant trees as well as shrubs and also this provides excellent nesting areas.

With so many types available on the market these days, you could well find yourself confused about what can be the right purchase for you. If you find yourself in this dilemma, all you got to do is ask. Ask people with more experience and who have already been birdwatching for longer than you.
The scopes are normally for advanced users. They are is purchased with a tripod. The lenses would be your utmost concern when it comes to this. Inspect those closely before you buy one, as they are the most important aspect of these.

There are a lot of other optics available to you, that you could try once you have mastered the use of binoculars and scopes. It varies from night vision, infrared, cameras to photograph or record your observations. You could even use video among the many other choices open to you.

In the northeastern corner of Puerto Rico lies one of the richest rain forests on earth. El Yunque National Forest, formerly called the Caribbean National Forest, is the only tropical rain forest in the United States National Forest System. It’s an important ecosystem on the island, and a favorite destination of native Puerto Ricans and tourists alike.

Occupying just over 28,000 acres, it’s impossible to see the entire thing in one day, or even in one week. Some areas are so dense as to make any sort of hiking nearly impossible. Still, there are many areas that are more open and conducive to hiking or walking. And there’s a lot to see. Waterfalls, all kinds of plants and flowers, and too many birds and other forms of wildlife to count. If you really want to get a good look at some of the animals that live in the forest bring a pair of waterproof binoculars. They need to be waterproof because the air is so humid, it would damage regular binoculars.

El Yunque is one of the oldest nature reserves in the western hemisphere. The land was protected by Spain’s King Alfonso XII in 1876, and then established as Luquillo Forest Reserve in 1903. It became a National Forest in 1906, and was renamed Caribbean National Forest in 1935. It remained as such until 2007, when the name was changed to El Yunque to portray more accurately the culture and history of Puerto Rico and its people.

A true rainforest, El Yunque receives about 240 inches of rain each year. That’s roughly 100 billion gallons throughout the forest. Another good reason to make sure you bring waterproof binoculars or cameras! You may also want to use a good binocular harness to keep your hands free while you hike.

Because it’s a Federally managed forest, there is no lodging within its confines. There are several hotels near El Yunque. It’s easy to find a place to stay that’s convenient to the forest, which you’ll appreciate after a day of hiking. There are lots of other activities to take part in, too. You can participate in guided tours, snorkeling, and moonlight boat cruises. In Fajardo, a small city not far from El Yunque, you can also kayak through a bioluminescent bay. The light is created by microscopic plankton that illuminate when touched. It’s truly a sight to behold.

Puerto Rico is a commonwealth of the United States, so no passport is necessary to travel there. If you’re traveling from anywhere other than the U.S., it’s a good idea to check on this before you plan your travel so you’re prepared. While you’re visiting, be sure to sample some of Puerto Rico’s native cuisine. The island is known for everything from the staple chicken and rice, to delicious fresh seafood. The island also offers several kinds of exotic tropical fruit not found in many other parts of the world.

El Yunque makes it possible for may people to see a real rain forest without having to travel too long of a distance. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience not to be missed.
