Can you answer my extremely difficult cat riddle (I bet not!)?

May 20, 2010 by

As I was walking to St Ives
I met a man with seven wives
Each wife was carrying seven sacks
And in each sack were seven cats
Each cat in his particulars
Has seven pairs of Nikon 7×40 binoculars

What is the combined magnification of all the binoculars put together?
672,280 is WAY too high
Virus Detected: you are wrong

Brown Hair, Blue Eyes: it’s not one of those lame trick questions
So far, Lauren is the closest
ahaha – your working’s completely wrong, but strangely you came quite close to the correct answer…
Danny is now very close, comparatively. The closest out of all of you, anyway.
Grub: no it doesn’t

Clue to all: the 40 has nothing to do with magnification. It refers to how much light is let in. You can ignore it…

  3. Smark says:

    672,280.

  4. Android H1029 nanotech enhanced says:

    672,280..

  5. Virus Detected says:

linear magnification= height of object x object distance from lens
since the lens are 7×40, the problems is easy.
    7×40=280
taking reference to the number of binoculars, number of binoculars is (280+63)x7
lens size = number of lens x combined magnification
therefore, (7×40)=(280+63)x7 is the combined magnification.
    Horray!
    i solved the riddle!

  6. brown hair blue eyes<3 says:

    one.

This is a mix of two riddles. One approach is that you were going to St Ives and met this group maybe coming from there or going elsewhere so there was only one going to St Ives.

The other version has the question of how many legs are on / in a bus carrying 7 adults each having 7 bags each having 7 cats each having 7 kittens to which the answer is 10990!

Only one person was going to St. Ives. YOU

  7. Evil Kitten says:

    Yes i can.

  8. That Guy You Saw says:

    800,000,000,000,000,000,000,000.

Can you tell i couldnt give a s***?

  9. daniel says:

does nikon even have a 7×40 binoculars ?

  10. Lauren L says:

    7×7x40= 1,960

  11. Jesslovesbritni says:

    96040?

Lol I actually have no idea …

  12. ahaha says:

    (7×7)x(7×40)=13720
    …idk i’m probably wrong i guessed

  13. Danny says:

    16121.

    vote as best answer?

  14. grub says:

    7 wives = 49 sacks
    49 sacks = 343 cats
    343 cats = 343 pairs of 7×40 binoculars
this equals a total magnification of=96,040

  15. It's Me! says:

OMG! You were right. I can’t.

  16. spaceasthenia says:

Easy. 7 to the 5th power. The combined magnification is 16,807x.
